CHAPTER 13

A New Visitor

Chris did not sleep well that night. Nora had tried to answer his question but Chris could only follow a little of what she scribbled on the blackboard. In the end, all her explanations reminded him of the Doctor on TV saying wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey… stuff.

He was still dozing, with Dog lying quietly at the end of his bed, when Abby sneaked into his room. ‘Are you awake?’ she asked.

‘Yes. What’s up, Abby?’

‘I’m scared, Chris.’

‘What of?’ Chris sat up and rubbed his eyes. Dog let out a reproachful whine as Chris sat up, pulling his blanket through the translucent body of his pet ghost. ‘Sorry, Dog.’

‘I don’t like all this magic.’

‘You like Tabitha though,’ said Chris, as Dog gave Abby a reproachful stare.

‘And Dog.’ Abby scratched the ghost between his cold ears.

‘Do you like Daphne and Nora?’

‘I think so. Nora can be a bit scary but I liked gardening.’

‘I don’t think we’re going to do more spells any time soon, so I think you should be okay. Is there something else that’s worrying you?’

‘Why don’t they know what’s going on?’

‘Adults don’t know everything. Usually they pretend to but Daphne and Nora don’t do that. They believe we’re big enough to be told the truth.’

‘That’s nice of them,’ said Abby. ‘I bet they’re worried too.’

‘Probably,’ Chris replied. He considered this for the first time as they sat and thought about all that had happened to them over the last few days.

‘Time to get up, you two,’ said Mum from the doorway, smiling at her two kids dozing on the same bed.

‘Okay, Mum,’ Chris replied.

‘Woof,’ barked Dog, but Mum didn’t seem to notice.

‘Come on, let’s get some breakfast,’ Chris said but for once Abby wasn’t enthusiastic about food.

They followed Mum downstairs to the kitchen. Abby sat quietly at the table as Chris helped Mum make breakfast. ‘Is there a plan for today?’ she asked.

‘I think we’re going to play in the garden,’ Abby said.

‘That’ll be nice. Did you enjoy your walk yesterday?’

‘Yes, there was loads to see,’ said Chris.

Abby giggled.

‘What’s so funny, you little monster?’ asked Mum, ruffling Abby’s hair.

‘She spent more time doing handstands than looking at things.’ Chris gave Abby a look behind Mum’s back. He didn’t want his sister to start talking about magic and crossing worlds.

‘I like doing handstands.’

‘Indeed you do.’ Mum smiled. ‘Come on, eat up.’

There was a knock on the door and Mum looked startled. ‘I swear they’re getting earlier.’ She went to answer the front door at the same time as Tabitha wandered through the wood of the closed back door. The ghost cat sauntered over to Abby and leapt into her lap.

‘Tabitha,’ screeched Abby, jumping with shock at the cold sensation of the ghost cat touching her. Her cereal spilled across the table.

‘What is going on?’ Mum asked from the doorway. Nora stood behind her, frowning as Tabitha leapt away from the falling cereal.

‘Sorry, Mum.’ Chris interrupted his sister before she spoke about her ghost cat. ‘I’ll clean it up.’

Daphne helped Chris tidy up as Mum finished her breakfast.
